Eugenia Mandzhieva, Du Juan & Hye Park Editorial for Time Magazine's Style & Design Issue, Fall 2008

Time Magazine recently released its annual Style & Design issue and included in this year's compilation is an article on the emergence Asian models in the international fashion scene. An editorial (actually, it's just one photo) that accompanied the article features Eugenia Mandzhieva, Du Juan and Hye Park in white dresses and gold sandals. There is also a compendium video on Time Magazine's website, Time Video, which has better photos/images than the one published in the magazine.

Eugenia Mandzhieva, one of my favorite Asian models, is actually of Russian nationality. Despite her amazing cat-like look, her career has not matched those of other top Asian models. I believe this is, in part due to the fact that Eugenia does not have China Vogue or Korea Vogue backing her career like those of Du Juan and Hye Park respectively. Du Juan is a regular on China Vogue and Hye Park is on almost every issue of Korea Vogue. The support and media exposure they get from those magazines helped push their careers up to the next level. In contrast, Eugenia Mandzhieva has only appeared on the cover of Russian Vogue once and that was in June 2007.

Eugenia Mandzhieva's most significant exposure has been on the runways of New York, Milan and Paris. Unfortunately, it has not translated to major success in terms of editorial pages or/and ad campaigns. Most of her print work has been for foreign publications like China Vogue (March 2008) and Korea Vogue (??). Lately, she has also been doing a lot of catalog shoots and appearing in ad campaigns in the US, specifically for SimplyVera by Vera Wang (Fall 2007) and Uniqlo (Fall 2008).

N.B.: The full text of the Time Magazine article is posted on this companion blog, Fashion Intellect.

Hye Park Editorial for UK Harper's Bazaar, October 2008

Here is an interesting but not necessarily exciting editorial with Hye Park in UK's Harper's Bazaar, October 2008 issue. It is definitely a big coup for her because UK Harper's Bazaar rarely feature Asian models, much less an entire editorial with only the Asian model alone. Most European and American magazines will feature an Asian model if she was paired with other non-Asian models.

The close-up photos are amazing but I wish the photographer had used a more diverse background or scenery. The first couple of photos were beautiful but then, after the same thing repeated over and over again, it just got boring.

My favorite is Photo #5. Hye Park has one of the most interesting faces in fashion today. And the cat-eyes makeup is awesome.

Eugenia Mandzhieva & Hye Park Editorial for Korean Magazine

I absolutely love this editorial with Eugenia Mandzhieva and Hye Park set on the streets of NYC. You can literally feel the energy from the photos. The hair, makeup and clothes are simply beautiful but realistic and practical. The girls are smiling and excited about their shopping trip in the city.

It's from a Korean magazine but I don't know which one it was. Was this from Korea Vogue? If so, which issue was it from? Does anyone know?

Hye Park in Photo #8 is spectacular -- she is like a burst of sunshine in that photo!! And Eugenia Mandzhieva is such an underrated model. They need to put her in more magazine editorials!

Hye Park Editorial in Korea W Magazine

I have to admit, I am so in love with this Hye Park editorial photographed by David Byun for the Korea W Magazine. She is not the prettiest model but if you look at her body of work posted here on Asian Models Blog, you can't deny that Hye has the most exciting and eccentric editorials of all the models I have featured.

Hye Park Editorial for US Elle, June 2009

I'm all for avant garde work/editorial but these are not the most attractive or flattering photographs of Hye Park. In fact, some of the photos are particularly hideous!!! Why do US fashion editors feel the need to make Asian models look at weird as possible? Hye is such a beautiful girl but you couldn't tell at all from these photos.

Joe Zee, Anne Slowey and Roberta Myers, what were you all smoking in the back closet when this came across your desk? The Joe Zee and Anne Slowey from Stylista (the defunct tv-show) would have ripped this to pieces.

Hye Park Editorial for US Harper's Bazaar, January 2009

In the last four months alone, Hye Park has appeared in 4 different Harper's Bazaars -- UK Harper's Bazaar (October 2008), China Harper's Bazaar (November 2008), Korea Harper's Bazaar (November 2008) and US Harper's Bazaar (January 2009). That is quite a feat for an Asian model. Harper's Bazaar must really love Hye.

Hye Park Editorial in Flair Magazine

This is the second collaboration between Hye Park and photographer, Laurie Bartley for (Italian) Flair Magazine. I love the action in the photography but Hye doesn't look her best here.
