Han Jin Editorial for Another Magazine, Fall 2008/Winter 2009

Han Jin from South Korea has been the dominant Asian model on the runways of New York, Milan and Paris since her debut in Fall 2006/Winter 2007. She usually averaged over 50 shows per season (excluding the extra shows she does during couture and resort weeks), which translates to over 100 shows per year. During the Fall 2007/Winter 2008 season alone, she appeared in 64 shows. That is quite a feat for any model, not just for an Asian girl. [Note: Liu Wen of China did more shows than Han Jin this season.]

Han Jin's superstar status on the runways, however has not gained her much editorial work or ad campaign in New York, Paris or Milan. She is, nonetheless extremely popular in South Korea where she appears regularly in Korea Vogue and Korea Harper's Bazaar. Outside of South Korea, her work is harder to come by.

In the last seven seasons since her ascension to the top of the modeling world, Han Jin has booked only three international ad campaigns. The first was a solo effort for Anna Molinari in Fall 2006/Winter 2007 shot by Craig McDean. That ad campaign was hideous and a disaster; it almost destroyed her career. The following season, Han Jin booked an ad campaign with Italian mass retailer, Benetton shot by David Sims. In the ad, she was covered from head to toe in a giant hooded parka that obscured her face and concealed her identity. Her final international ad campaign was for Moschino in Fall 2007/Spring 2008 shot by Peter Lindberg. Although the campaign was beautifully done, it rarely appeared in magazines. Furthermore, there were six other Asian models in that single shot campaign.

So what went wrong? How does a beautiful girl who ruled the runways ended up with so few major work outside of Korea? I think part of the problem is that Han Jin was not getting adequent representation (in my opinion) by her agency outside of Korea. If she had signed with better agencies like Elite or IMG, her career would have taken a more successful turn.

Despite the lack of international ad campaigns (that's where the money really is, folks), Han Jin is still doing extremely well, thank you very much. Her runway appearances alone probably earned her an estimated half a million US dollars per year for the last three years. She also has numerous projects (a reality TV show) and ad campaigns in South Korea that will keep her living well for a very long time.

Here is Han Jin in an untitled editorial for the British publication, Another Magazine (Fall/Winter 2008) shot by Craig McDean. This 24-page editorial stars 11 different models and Han Jin is on the first and only page. Unfortunately (AGAIN), she was plastered with so much make-up that it rendered her almost unrecognizable.

runway doesn't pay much, so half a million for shows is very highly not likely.

It is true that she is almost unrecognizable in the photo. Although I still love that photo.
I think the colours are great and she looks amazing!

Runway shows can pay fairly well if the girl is famous and in high demand.

Most new models start out at about $800/per show but international models like Han Jin probably commands anywhere from $2,000 - $5,000/per show.

Supermodels like Naomi probably gets upwards of $8,000/per show.

According to an article in Wall Street Journal (Sept 2007), superstar models like Jessica Stam who had numerous ad campaigns out that season (including Dior) was rumored to have received over $10,000 per show. Other veteran models with two or more seasons under their belts might see $6,000 per show while the the new girls averaged between $4,500 to $2,000 a show.

Agency models (ie. those represented by modeling agencies) almost always get paid because that's how the agencies make money. They will not let their models do shows for free clothes.

I personally thought her Anna Molinari ad was fantastic.

And, Marilyn is a MUCH better "high fashion" agency than Elite.

I heard that models sometimes get paid either thousands or nothing at all! Few years ago, Ralph Lauren once wanted Gisele so desperately that he forked out $30,000 just for her to be on his show!

Anna Molinari campaigned almost destroyed her career?! Why do you say that? The season after that campaign came out was her most successful season ever. Don't know where u got that info.

Marilyn have done an amazing job with her career and deserve a lot of praise. And look how well they've done with Liu Wen and Daul.
Which asian models have Elite launched recently?

She had a couple of offers from the top agencies and chose Marilyn herself. IMG would have been OK. Elite would have been worse for sure.

Half a million for shows in not unlikely for a top model doing many shows across 3/4 cities. This is probably what Natasha Poly makes - Han wouldn't have made so much but still a good amount.

I think Han is a fierce component on the runway. She has a good walk, good attitude, and she adds an edge to the clothes. However, in pictures, she doesnt always translate well. And despite how much we hate it, if you have to get all token asian about the campaign, the advertiser is guaranteed a better shot with hiring the more photogenic Hye Park or Du Juan. So I guess thats why Han Jin doesnt really get campaigns.

That said, if only Tom Ford was still around doing Gucci, there's no girl more feral looking and sexy for Gucci rather than HJ. Mr.Ford wouldve hired her if had they decided to use an Asian girl.
I think McQueen could also use HanJin.

Han Jin gets more runway work because she has a great runway body. James Scully even said that she has one of the best bodies in the business. HOWEVER, a great runway body doesn't translate to editorial and campaign success without the face. And to be quite honest, she has a terrible face.

her Anna Molinari ad was disaster! Obviously, that didn't do well for her career.

Of course, she isn't exactly photogenic like Du and Hye. Thankfully, Marilyn got her but, Han can get better offers from bigger and well-connected agencies.

Hello, Daul is in Elite...and she does well than Han, surprisingly.

I have to agree with AMB about Han's look almost unrecognizable in this editorial. Not good.

Anyway...

Daul and Han are perfect opposite solar! Daul does well in editiioral but, did ok at runway.

Han got barely any job at editioral but did fantastic at runways....

Hmmm...weird, eh?

'her Anna Molinari ad was disaster! Obviously, that didn't do well for her career. '

Err can you back that up with evidence? I already said that the season after that campaign went to print was her best of all time. She's done almost ALL the best shows like Valentino, YSL, Gucci, LV, Chloe, Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel etc.

Can you name one major fashion campaign ELITE has booked for Daul?

Have you seen her showlist? It's very weak compared with Liu Wen.

Daul's career is going much slower than Han's did...maybe thats good for her who knows.

Han has a terrible face?! Can you please email your photos to asianmodelsblog and the owner can make a post comparing your face with Han's. Actually just send your photos directly to IMG, if you think you can say Han has a terrible face, you must be a descendent of Helen of Troy.

Daul did MAC cosmetics.

MAC cosmetics is not a fashion campaign.
