Liu Wen Walks For Victoria's Secret, 2009-2010

Liu Wen became only the second third Asian model to walk the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show last week. Most news outlets incorrectly reported Liu Wen as the first Asian model to do the show.

The first honor went to Ujjwala Raut who did the show in 2003-2004 show Yasmeen Ghauri who walked for the show in 1996 (unconfirmed), followed by Ujjwala Raut in the 2003-4 show.

The 2009-2010 Victoria's Secrety show will be aired on CBS on December 1st.

i agree with the first poster, when ppl say "asian" (at least in the US) they usually mean east or southeast asian

ujjwala was smoking on Victoria's Secret rumways. She held her own next to more publicized models on there like tyra and naomi!!

  7. Congrats to Liu Wen. But the outfit looks like a sun reflector for tanning. Maybe that was the inspiration. Intergalactic superheroine sneaks a tan during breaks between kicking alien's butt. In Victoria Secret.

  8. Yasmeen Ghauri - who was one of the original Victoria's Secret models - was South Asian. She was the first Asian model to walk for Victoria's Secret...She was also one of the highest paid supermodels of the 90's...She was half Pakistani and half German.
Then we have Ujjwaula...not to mention the irony of the article stating that she is the first 'Asian' and then goes on to say that Chanel Iman is the new Angel...Um Chanel Iman is half Korean...
Also, congrats to Chanel Iman on becoming the first East Asian Victoria's Secret Angel.
And in the US, South Asian is Asian in the census just like everywhere else in the world - it's just that Americans have racism and educational problems...Since East Asians and South Asians look so different, white people there refuse to believe they're both asians.

  12. I think they meant Chinese Asian. As a Singaporean Chinese myself, I would have classified Yasmeen and Ujjwaula as Indian. Caucasions tend to assume everyone not white is Asian. Just something I've noticed over the years.

In North America, the term "Asian" refers most commonly to people of predominantly East Asian (China, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, Taiwan), and Southeast Asian (Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Peninsular Malaysia while the maritime section consists of Brunei, East Malaysia, East Timor, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, and Singapore) ancestry.

In the United Kingdom, the term "Asian" refers most commonly to South Asians (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Some definitions may also include Afghanistan, Burma, Tibet, and the British Indian Ocean Territories.)

Ujjwala Raut is Indian (South Asian), the first Asian walking the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

Liu Wen is Chinese (East Asian), the first East Asian, the second Asian walking the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

US born model Chanel Iman her mother is Korean and African-American, and her father is African-American, she is 3/4 African-American.

Canada born model Yasmeen Ghauri has a German mother and a Pakistani father

Both Ghauri & Iman are North American models and are not 100% Asian, I do not think we could define them as asian model.

I think they mean first EAST Asian. Isn't Liu Wen the first Asian face of Estee Lauder too?
