Introducing Xi Mengyao Ming Xi from China from the Elite Model's Look World Competition, 2009

Ming Xi Xi Mengyao (a.k.a. Barbie -- is there a WORST western name for a Chinese girl?) from China was one of the finalists at the recent Elite Model's Look World competition. She didn't win -- Julia Saner from Switzerland did -- but her show card appeared on Models.com, which is a good thing. It will be interesting to see if she makes it in the international scene.

Elite Model's Look World competition is definitely NOT in the same realm as Ford Model's Supermodel of the World in terms of generating attention and creating top models. However, I think Stefanie Seymour and Linda Evangelista started out as Elite Model's Look finalists in the early 1980s.

I agree that Elite's Model Look (formerly Look of the Year) has generated a lot of supermodels WAAAY back. But recently, the Ford Supermodel of the World has generated more stars than Model Look, namely Chanel Iman, Kendra Spears, Hyoni Kang, Kate Somers, Camilla Finn, Ajuma Nasenyana, among a long list. Jen Messelier who was Model Look winner is with Ford, as well.

Don't forget Cindy Crawford and Karen Mulder (former Elite Look of the Year contestants).

  8. Yeah I agree that's a bad name...

Recent ELITE finalists have been successful as well, Constance Jablonski, this season's catwalk queen, and Eniko Mihalik are both alumni.

Sometimes you don't even have to win to make it big. Cindy and Stephanie were contestants in the same year but didn't even place. Chanel, the biggest break out star in her batch over at Ford was merely a finalist. Then there are the winners who are never heard from again...Katsia from Belarus (Chanel's batch) and the winner of Ford's contest from Brazil last year who won with almost no fanfare or press.

  12. hmmm. i know many people are the WTF with the whole barbie name, but in the POV of someone in the whole magazine fashion industry, that name is like a little boost - it grabs attention -good or bad- but nevertheless
and thats how some models get the spotlight; look @ chanel iman- her name caused quite a stir too
